The Dallas Cowboys are still in the hunt for a playoff spot and a shot at the Super Bowl in February, but after three losses in a row, their challenge had been dealt a huge blow. They needed a performance when playing against the Washington Redskins on Thursday night, and although it wasn’t pretty, they got the job done which is the most important thing right now. It's vital the Cowboys use this momentum and take it forward with them in what is likely to still be a tough few weeks as the season draws to a close and the playoffs appear on the horizon.
In what eventually looked to be a comfortable victory, the Cowboys overcame the Washington Redskins 38-14 on Thursday, taking their record for the season to a level 6-6. That gives them hope of making the playoffs, although they have some tough games to come and three of their remaining four games are on the road. That will make things slightly tougher, but nothing they can’t handle, the formula for the Cowboys is pretty simple right now. If they play like they have done in their three previous defeats then they won’t make the playoffs, play good, effective football like they did against the Redskins and they probably will make the playoffs.
A lot is going to rest on the shoulders of quarterback Dak Prescott, who has struggled over the past few weeks. His offence have scored single figure points in the three losses they had before beating the Redskins, and while ever he is creating those kinds of numbers he will not lead his team to the playoffs. He wasn’t spectacular on Thursday night, throwing for just over 100 yards with a completion rate of just 11 from 22. It is up to him to improve those numbers, and he has to do it quickly with just four games to go.
The latest Bet365 NFL betting has the Cowboys at 66/1 to win the Super Bowl, showing their chances right now. While that doesn’t seem like they have a good chance of winning it, should they rack up a couple of wins over the next two weeks and those odds will begin to tumble. The Cowboys may have been down and subdued in recent weeks, but we saw them begin to come to life on Thursday, and if this is the start of something big then don’t write them off just yet.
It may seem a little farfetched that the Dallas Cowboys can compete for the Super Bowl from the position they are in right now, but don’t discount them. They have been on a very bad run recently, but Thursday could have been the change of pace they needed and they could now go on and build on that. Should they do so then their chances of winning a Super Bowl would increase, and who knows what happens when they get into the playoffs? The Cowboys looked down and out, but maybe there is life still in them yet.
